The art of Gabriel Pitcher focuses expressive figurative portraits, with the exploration of identity and truth at the heart of his work.
Contradictions of the classically beautiful or socially uncomfortable feature prominently in his pieces, with the medium of raw steel mirroring these cold misconceptions. In illuminating and reimagining these characteristics, Gabriel forces the gaze of the viewer to look intently where in reality they may ignore or avoid an interaction. A psychological intrigue arises in recognising that like a mirror, these portraits reflect only our own prejudices.
Gabriel paints intuitively, harmonising colours which naturally contrast. As he layers thick oil paints, he simultaneously strips them back; literally scratching into the paint to reveal what is beneath.
Gabriel Pitcher is a British artist living and working in Penang, Malaysia.
